Our Budget and Family Binder

If you saw my last post then you know I am doing a three week series around filing organisation. I have been using a Binder for around a year now and for some it may not work, but for me it truly does.

As I mentioned before, our filing cabinet lives in the garage so all of my paperwork is filed in the binder for the quarter. Once the quarter is up I simply take my binder out with me and file everything away in the cabinet. It eliminates paper mess around the house and also helps motivate me to file away neatly (eventually).

I keep two calendars at the start of my binder. One is "A Year At A Glance" to give me a quick idea of any family birthdays or events coming up and I add anything important that I don't want to forget in here!! The other calendar is a monthly one in order to have a little more detailed way of keeping track of when bills are due, school events and the like.

I have made cute cover pages for these categories in my binder:
● Important Documents
e.g birth certificates, passports etc
● Budget and Budgeting tools
e.g budget spreadsheet, money tracker, bank details
● Unpaid Bills
(anything yet to be paid)
● Paid Bills
(any bills this quarter that have been paid)
● Payslips
(Mine and Aarons)

Any miscellaneous items are filed at the back or if they need to be filed right away they are placed at the very front.

I created a cute little label that I laminated and stuck to a plastic envelope for all of my receipts. I keep them monthly just to see how I spent my money and to help me figure out ways to save my hard earned cash!!

I <3 my binder!

Thanks for stopping by!

  3. Thank you! I have been hoping for some sort of system that I could use for my filling. I have a binder that I just fill and never get around to emptying in the cabinet. I'm going to make it a quarterly job and get organised too!

    1. Thanks Nic! Yep, been there - that's what inspired the overhaul!!

  4. Ha - when my mother married my dad, her new MIL showed her how to do the books for the property - this clip was for things that needed to be paid, and that spike was for things that had been paid. End of lesson.

Aren't you glad we live in a "paperless" society?!

    1. Haha love the process!
Unfortunately, once it goes to the filing cabinet the categories are a little more in depth than paid and unpaid lol.

Paperless definitely has its pro's and cons!

  5. It's great to have a system that works! Mine is similar but not as in depth as yours. :)
